I have ranted before about my distaste (or at the very least unease) with continually “whoring” myself in the name of self-promotion. Something I do realise is a necessary evil. I am my own business after all.
But I am super stoked to show you guys today my latest published article. It has been a very good run with articles for me over the last 4 months with 5 features published in some pretty wicked magazines. However the one with which I am most proud appears in this month’s Wend Magazine out of the US. URL: www.markkalch.com

I can’t race off to the river because I have to mow the yard. We have visitors coming. Bummer! I was stoked to be able to get back on a river, any river during the week. Pretty rusty as I squeezed ever so clumsily into the kayak. With a so-so roll I was stoked to make it down the river at one with my boat. So to offset this unavoidable heat (well for me anyway) I thought I might hunt down something pretty cool for you guys. I hope you like! URL: www.markkalch.com

Where it comes from, how many visitors (not bloody enough!), what countries, what source etc. Everything. I have noticed that when I post something quite deep and meaningful I get a fairly large spike in visits. Interestingly, the Friday Stoke does not produce the same sort of stoke amongst visitors as the more serious stuff. Should I dump the Friday Stoke? I don’t think I can! I love these posts! I do spend far too long searching for just the right one, but I make damn sure it gives me a nice feeling and hope that it gives those who take the time to watch it the same. Today’s is no different. Every day I try to be better. No matter how small or how large this daily achievement is, I can go to sleep knowing that I have improved myself. Perhaps I finished (or started) an article or booked a speaking engagement. Maybe I went for a long walk in the mountains and made a conscious decision to work on my navigation (as I did yesterday). These things, I sub-consciously add up and their effect multiplies. They drive me to achieve more and more. I improve myself as a by-product of doing something I enjoy. My job. URL: www.markkalch.com

It leads to a lot of day dreaming, internet research, soul searching, second guessing and finally solid commitment. During the dreaming phase there are so many variables that you can throw up (which is part of the fun!). I tend to go for human-powered expeditions and certainly lean towards natural-powered expeditions. The scope for these journeys are so wide as to make one’s final decision a difficult one. Walking, cycling, kayaking, rafting, rowing, gliding, sailing, pack-rafting, even SUPing! What to choose? URL: www.markkalch.com

Last weekend I headed to the beach and saw the legend that is Laird Hamilton, reminding everyone just how much of a freak he is on a SUP board (or any board for that matter). There are not enough superlatives to describe what sort of waterman this guy is. Check out his site or any vids and you can see for yourself.
On top of that, over the last few days I was stoked to follow my friends, Sarah Outen and Dave Cornthwaite as they also used SUP boards to paddle their way 150 miles from Bath to London on a little adventure to rack up some Blue Miles. While Sarah may not have the same skills on a SUP board as Laird, there is no denying she enjoys is just as much. An awesome paddle for a great cause.
So, on that note, take a look at today’s stoke. You guessed it! SUP! It is just a really sweet video and shows the vibe that you want to be getting everytime you are on the water, on your bike, off for a run or in the hills. You know the word I am looking for! Have a great weekend! URL: www.markkalch.com

One of my favourite clips chosen for Friday Stoke so far is most definitely the Scraper Bike team. I enjoyed the departure from the standard adrenalin, outdoors, atypical clip that I had always envisaged using for a Friday post. With that in mind I had planned for today’s installment to feature this (you must watch this clip! I think they might be taking the mickey out of me!). Brilliant piece of work.
However, just recently via Mark Jobman at the Adventure Chronicles, I came across the below. More than cinematic brilliance, it is the soul and message behind the people involved (Anson Fogel/Forge, Rush Sturges, Fred Norquist) which make the grade. Less, a roar at the top of your lungs type stoke feeling, but a much more powerful zen type stoke. Either way – it works. For more info go here. URL: www.markkalch.com
